How it works

1

Add your rentals

Pick the state and town, the year built and the units. myleadsafe works out which lead rules reach each unit, from the federal disclosure rule to your town’s certificate.

2

Log each certificate

Enter the date issued, the inspector and the fee, and snap a photo of the certificate or attach the PDF. The app shows what’s overdue, what’s due in the next 60 days and what’s next at turnover.

3

Get reminded, print a packet

Add due dates to your calendar with alerts 30 and 7 days ahead. When the town, an insurer or a buyer asks, make one PDF with every date, certificate and the federal checklist.

Rules we track

Each guide says who’s covered, how long a certificate lasts, what it costs, the penalties and where to file, with sources. Checked November 6, 2026.

Questions

Is this a government website?

No. myleadsafe is a free, independent tool. It does not register, file or certify anything for you. You still get inspected and register the way your state or city requires; myleadsafe keeps track of the dates and the paperwork.

Which rentals need a lead-safe certificate?

It depends on where the rental is. Most programs cover units built before 1978. New Jersey inspects at turnover and every 3 years, Maryland wants a yearly registration and a certificate at each turnover, and cities like Cleveland, Toledo and Philadelphia have their own certificates. See the rules by state.

What does the federal rule require?

For housing built before 1978, landlords must give tenants the EPA lead pamphlet, disclose any known lead paint or hazards, put the Lead Warning Statement in the lease, and keep the signed disclosure for 3 years. The full checklist.

Where is my information stored?

On your device, in your browser. There is no account. Download a backup file from the app now and then; you can restore it on another computer or phone.

How much does a lead inspection cost?

It depends on the type: a visual check with dust wipes for a lead-safe certificate usually costs less than a full lead-based paint inspection with an XRF gun. Typical prices and what each covers.

Does it cost anything?
